Instructions After Total Knee Replacement

You have undergone an operation, which is going to give second lease of life. The successful end result of your operation depends on you as much as on the treatment given to you.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS (For 1 Month)

• Bed with a Height of 20-22 Inches
• Commode Elevator or Chair of same height
• Walker
• Stick with broad base (Tripod or Quadripod)
• Ice Packs

FOLLOWING TEST TO BE DONE ON 10th DAY FROM SURGERY

• Urine Routine/ Microscopy
• Serum Creatinine

PHYSIOTHERAPY EXERCISES

• Vigorous Ankle Toe Movements
• Static Quadriceps and Static Hamstrings
• Straight Leg Raise
• Knee bending in Supine Lying
• Knee Flexion in high sitting
• HIP Abduction

PHYSIOTHERAPY REHABILITATION

• Knee flexion up to 110 Deg by day of stitch removal
• Patient should use walker for first week after surgery, then shift to a stick for another 1 week depending on patients recovery.
• While climbing stairs, use the painful leg initially and gradually start using both legs alternatively.
• You should exercise and walk at least 4 times a day and should get back to normal life as early as possible.
• Full range of motion is achieved in 6 weeks.
• Do not use weight cuffs, Pulley or Machine of any kind. (In exceptional case, only with consultation with the Concerned Surgeon.)

GENERAL INSTRUCTION

• Keep wound area dry and clean and sit in sunshine for 15 min. for initial Month
• Swelling on the foot and leg is common occurrence and in such conditions should raise the leg and put crepe Bandage from foot till knee
• Some pain is expected after surgery, but if it is decreasing gradually then it’s of no concern
• Do not lie on the side of surgery after HIP Replacement for 6 weeks. Thereafter you may use 1 Pillow between your legs.
• Never jump or run and while walking turn slowly taking small steps
• It takes around 3 months to get fully normal. Some muscle ache will take more time to get back to normal.
• Never sit on floor or cross-legged or cross over.
• You can drive car after 7-8 weeks.
• You must take prophylactic antibiotic in case of any surgical procedure performed like tooth extraction
• Always be careful of any long duration infection in the body and take immediate antibiotics as advised by doctor.
• You can walk as much as comfortable, swim, cycle, play Golf.
• *Regular follow up must every year with the surgeon.

INFORM DOCTOR IF

• Severe pain, redness or swelling in calf.
• Sudden excruciating and increase in pain
• Blood stains on dressing
• Severe swelling in calf
• Redness or Allergic reaction
• Poor range of motions
• In case of plaster, cast breakage, or blueness or inability to move fingers or toe

PLASTER CAST INSTRUCTIONS

• Keep moving your fingers or toes, specially gripping.
• Rest the limb in raised position for 48 Hours until Plaster has completely dried.
